REMEMBERING AND FORGETTING

REMEMBERING AND FORGETTING

October 14, 2020

SUMMARY:

In this dialogue, Matías reflects on the importance of remembering and forgetting in life. He realizes that remembering is like a gift, a unique ability that defines us and connects us with the universe. The analogy is made with being a “rememberer,” like a librarian who organizes the memories of life. He discovers that living in the present is essential to fully experience life, but he also understands that memory is necessary to make sense of the narrative of his life. In the end, Matías concludes that both remembering and forgetting are fundamental parts of understanding life, and the goal is to live in the present while allowing the past and future to detach from it.

QUOTE:

“Remembering and forgetting are not antagonists in the novelized history of the Universe; they are the two fundamental parts of reading comprehension.”

EXERCISES:

  1. Conscious Breathing Meditation:

  • Find a quiet place and sit in a comfortable position.

  • Close your eyes and begin to focus on your breath.

  • Observe how the air enters and exits your body without trying to change it.

  • When your mind wanders to the past or future, gently redirect your attention back to your breath.

  • Practice this for at least 10-15 minutes a day to develop the ability to be present.

  1. Mindfulness Meditation:

  • Choose an everyday object, such as a cup of tea, a flower, or a stone.

  • Examine the object mindfully, noticing every detail, texture, and color.

  • Keep your mind focused on the object, not letting it wander to other thoughts.

  • This practice helps you appreciate beauty and presence in the present moment.

  1. Triad Meditation (Past-Present-Future):

  • Sit comfortably and close your eyes.

  • Reflect on your past, acknowledging the lessons and experiences that have brought you to the present.

  • Then, feel the reality of the present moment, experiencing each sensation and emotion.

  • Finally, project your thoughts into the future, visualizing your goals and desires.

  • This meditation connects you with the temporal triad and helps you balance your focus on each aspect of your life.
