Joseph Campbell, an American professor and mythologist, conducted a comparative study of mythologies from various cultures around the world and found that certain elements in the challenges heroes had to overcome seemed to repeat in all legends, tales, myths, and narratives. How is it possible that such distant peoples have so many coincidences?
Just as these stories were invented by people born in different lands, these people remain human beings who project their ideals and knowledge into these narratives. As a result, the figure of the hero is the point where all ancestral wisdom converges, residing within ourselves in some way, and we can awaken to reach our most divine aspect.
The hero’s journey, or voyage, is a series of steps that a human can undertake to transform and thus save their world. It is a manifestation in symbols and metaphors of the energies pulsating within us to answer who we are and what we came to do in this life. Although it may sound like a transcendental mission, the reality is that any challenge life presents us can teach and shape us. Therefore, it is important to be attentive to the calls that everyday life presents to us. The Journey is the story of a life communicated through actions rather than words.
